As most of you know, the east coast has been hit with brutally cold weather with temperatures diving down to dangerously low numbers. While most are trying to wrap up and stay as warm as possible in their homes, there are countless people who have nowhere to go and face hypothermia, frostbite, and even death from the cold temperatures.
Last night was one of those nights. With many of our friends and church members currently homeless, our goal was to go out and get sleeping bags to as many people as possible who were weathering the cold. At first, it appeared there weren’t many people out on the streets at all, except the occasional police officer who was canvassing the city for those who were intoxicated to place them in a drunk tank, in order to save their lives. But as we continued to drive, we began to find a few unfortunate people who were on the park benches, and walking the lonely streets with nowhere to go.
As I pulled off on the side of the road, my husband Bo jumped out of the vehicle and approached a man who was sitting alone on the park bench. Much to my husband’s surprise, the man was reading his Bible. When Bo asked the gentleman if he needed a sleeping bag, he shared with him that he had been praying, not knowing how he was going to make it through the night, and what an answer to prayers that sleeping bag was. After giving it to the man, they shared a quick prayer, and we drove away. It never ceases to amaze me how God hears the prayers of the desperate, and sends help through His children at the perfect time! I truly believe that if we would open our eyes and ears, the Lord will direct us to those in need the most!
